  • The Resilience Circles project   A self-directed course designed for small groups of neighbors or friends to study what is behind the economic crisis and to develop mutually supportive relationships. Connects you to a nationwide network of folks doing Resilience Circles.

  • The City Repair Project  Begun in Portland, this highly successful block-organizing project has spawned highly creative, collective neighborhood improvements in many cities.

  • The Community Resilience Toolkit  A user-friendly guidebook to running a workshop for participants to examine the resilience of their community to difficult challenges now and in the future.

  • Santa Cruz Neighbors  A city-wide organization that links existing neighborhood associations. Good for police information and for setting up Neighborhood Watch programs.

  • Consensus Decision-Making.org  A very nice website on this topic, put together by local facilitator Tim Hartnett. Includes articles, videos, a book list, and more.

  • Nextdoor.com  A website tailor-made to facilitate communication among neighbors. Only people within a certain radius of your house can join your group.

  • Superbia! by Dan Chiras and Dave Wann. Subtitled “31 ways to create sustainable neighborhoods.” Real-life examples and how-tos for neighborhood projects from beginning to advanced.

  • The Placemaking Guidebook from the City Repair Project in Portland. Inspiring descriptions of “intersection repair” projects and many helpful tips. Available at http://cityrepair.org.

In-person help from Transition Santa Cruz

  • Neighborhood Leadership Workshops: Our periodic workshops provide a fun place to meet other folks wanting to bring their neighborhoods together, to practice skills like door-to-door outreach and meeting facilitation, and to learn about various kinds of neighborhood resilience-building.

  • Assistance on your block: You can request an experienced volunteer to go door-to-door with you or to help facilitate your first meeting or two.

  • Monthly leaders’ support group: An ongoing follow-up to the Leadership Workshop.
