Underwater Tour a Success!

Batya as Farmer Lorax (click to enlarge)Our "Underwater Tour of Downtown Santa Cruz in 2112" was a great success. At least 50 people turned out to march through downtown, showing solidarity for a strong Climate Action Plan in Santa Cruz. We dressed in giant sea anemone costumes, masks and snorkels, and bathing trunks. We saw amazing sights, like Fred Keeley "paddling" a real boat down Pacific Avenue, a real estate agent (Micah Posner in a business suit) of the future selling dock space in the downtown area, a Farmer Lorax reading Dr. Seuss transformed to a plea to protect the farmer's market, and more.

Underwater Tour and City Council Meeting

Tuesday, January 24, 2012
4:00 pm
City Hall, 809 Center St.

Come to an Underwater Tour of Santa Cruz, fun street theater designed to use laughter to help people imagine the urgent need for climate action. For best effect, come in costume for an underwater tour: snorkel, mask, sea animal costume, etc.

At 7 pm (after the Tour), will be a City Council Meeting on the Climate Action Plan.
Your voice is needed at this meeting, to let the Council know how much we care about real climate action.

You can also join our petition drive...

Time to get busy on the Climate Action Plan

Thursday, January 19, 2012
7:00 pm
Ecology Action, Cedar St. at Church St.

Make It RealHave you heard? The "final draft" of the City of Santa Cruz Climate Action Plan (CAP) is out.

But it's not quite final. We still have some important work to do to see to it that the City Council means business as they put their stamp of approval on this vital document. (Click here to read Michael Levy's opinion piece for the Sentinel explaining why.)

Join us as we host City Climate Action Coordinator Ross Clark and leaders from local environmental groups in an open discussion of the CAP. What's new in this draft? What's still missing? What more would you like to ask the City Council for? This meeting will be a good place to find out.

Occupy SC pic(map)

Transition Towns across the nation are finding ways to join hands with the Occupy movement. Occupy, with its focus on economic justice and democracy, and Transition, with our focus on local resilience, can inform each other, build bridges and support each other where our aims overlap.

For this month's Potluck-With-A-Purpose, we will host representatives of Occupy Santa Cruz for a discussion of questions like:

--What changes are Occupy Santa Cruz looking for?
--What ideas and resources can Transition Santa Cruz supply that support the goals of both of our movements?

Welcoming the author of Diet for a Small Planet
and
EcoMind

Yes, this is the legendary paradigm-buster, who in the 70s blew the whistle on the idea of food scarcity by discovering that the real problem was one of irrational and unfair distribution. Now she is providing brilliant new alternatives to some of environmentalists' favorite myths with her book, EcoMind. She will be joined by John Robbins, Wallace Nichols, and Michael Levy.
